Background of the National Cathedral
The National Cathedral Project which is being constructed in the Greater Accra Region situated within 9 acres of newly landscaped gardens adjacent to Osu Cemetery which will house a series of chapels, a baptistery, a 5000-seat two-level auditorium has been a controversial topic since the design for the cathedral was unveiled by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, in March 2018.
After the completion of the project and its fully operational, it is estimated to raise an excess amount of $94 million in it first four years. The building will not only serve as a place of worship but for tourist attraction as well.
The commissioning of the project by the government was supposed to happen on March 4, 2024 but never happened. The project has stalled with the government saying there is lack of funds to complete the project and lots of backlash at the government from the public.
