The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) over the disqualification of its presidential candidate, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, from the impending 2024 elections.
On Friday, the EC disqualified 11 presidential contenders, including Asamoah-Siaw, while clearing 13 for the December 7 elections.
According to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, all candidates were given the option to correct any problems on their nomination papers if issues were found.
However, Nana Ofori Owusu, the PPP National Chairman, said that the EC refused to provide them the same opportunity to remedy errors in their submission.
On September 25, the PPP Chairman filed a review against the EC, which is scheduled to be heard by the High Court on September 30, 2024.
The motion, slated for September 30, 2024, seeks to overturn a letter dated September 20, 2024, in which the Chairperson/Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission barred Asamoah-Siaw from running in the next 2024 Presidential Election.
The application seeks an order ordering the EC to accept his nomination paperwork, subject to any required legal modifications, and to clear him as a qualified candidate for the election.
Counsel for Asamoah-Siaw will present the argument at 9 a.m., with the intention of overturning the disqualification and allowing the PPP candidate to participate in the electoral process.
