On Wednesday, September 25, several Ghanaians living in New York organized a demonstration in response to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s address to the UN General Assembly.
According to the activists’ demands, at least the 42 protestors from the Democracy Hub who have been detained and placed under arrest must be released immediately.
Social media footage shows demonstrators brandishing signs that demand an independent and impartial court, good government, and an end to corruption.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly, President Akufo-Addo vehemently denounced global emissions, climate change, and the need for international action to protect the environment.
Their chants echoed their grievances: “Stop illegal mining in Ghana. Release the protesters now! Stop holding them without legal representation. Stop holding them without medical attention. Stop holding them without food and water.”
One protester exclaimed, “Ghana’s president is involved in illegal mining, arresting protesters without legal representation and holding them for days without food and water. And he is here talking about environmental issues. Stop illegal mining!”
