More than a decade after it disappeared from television, No Ordinary Family remains one of those shows that fans, including me, still believe deserved another chance.
On May 13, 2011, the American Broadcasting Company officially canceled the superhero family drama after just one season, ending hopes that I and a million other fans would see the Powell family’s story continue.
The cancellation came at a time when superhero television was still finding its footing. Today, audiences are accustomed to expansive comic book universes and interconnected superhero franchises. Back in 2010, however, No Ordinary Family attempted something different by blending family drama, comedy, crime fighting, and science fiction into one series.
Although the show attracted considerable attention when it premiered, declining ratings ultimately led ABC to end the series after 20 episodes.
What Was No Ordinary Family About?
As premiered on September 28, 2010, No Ordinary Family followed the lives of the Powell family, whose ordinary existence changed dramatically after surviving a mysterious plane crash in the Amazon rainforest.

Following the accident, each member of the family developed extraordinary abilities.
The series centered on:
- Michael Chiklis as Jim Powell, a police sketch artist who gained superhuman strength and near invulnerability.
- Julie Benz as Stephanie Powell, a scientist blessed with incredible speed.
- Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell, whose new ability allowed her to read minds.
- And my personal favorite, Jimmy Bennett as J.J. Powell, who developed an extraordinary level of intelligence.
As the family learned to live with their newfound powers, they also faced dangerous criminals, mysterious organizations, and the challenges of maintaining normal relationships.
Rather than focusing solely on action, the series explored how extraordinary abilities affected everyday family life.
Was this a strong premiere that couldn’t maintain momentum?
When No Ordinary Family debuted, expectations were high. No doubt about that.
The pilot episode attracted over 10 million viewers, making it one of ABC’s strongest new drama premieres that television season. Critics generally praised its family-friendly approach to superheroes, especially the chemistry between Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz.
However, the ratings steadily declined over the following months.
The increasingly competitive television landscape, combined with changing viewing habits and scheduling challenges, made it difficult for the series to retain its audience. By spring 2011, viewership had fallen significantly from its premiere numbers.
Why Did ABC Cancel No Ordinary Family?
On May 13, 2011, ABC announced that the No Ordinary Family series would not return for a second season.
I believe several factors contributed to the decision.
Declining Ratings
The biggest reason was falling viewership. Television networks rely heavily on ratings to determine whether a series remains financially viable. Although the No Ordinary Family show maintained a loyal fan base, the audience was not large enough to justify renewal.
Expensive Production
Producing a superhero drama required substantial investment.
Visual effects, stunt work, elaborate action scenes, and post-production costs made No Ordinary Family more expensive than many traditional dramas. Without consistently high ratings, recovering those production costs became increasingly difficult.
Tough Competition
The show aired during a period of fierce competition from other major network programs. Cable television was also becoming more influential, giving audiences more entertainment choices than ever before.
Creative Direction
Some television critics felt the series struggled to balance its different genres.
It attempted to combine:
- Superhero action
- Family drama
- Comedy
- Science fiction
- Crime investigation
While many fans appreciated this unique mix, others believed the show never fully committed to any one direction.
No Ordinary Family was cancelled because of a combination of declining ratings, falling performance among key advertising demographics, high production costs, increasing competition, mixed critical reception, and ABC’s decision to refresh its 2011–12 programming lineup. ABC did not publicly attribute the cancellation to a specific reason.
The Cast got praises despite the cancellation
For me, the performances remained one of the show’s biggest strengths. Michael Chiklis, already well known for his Emmy-winning role in The Shield, delivered a believable performance as a reluctant superhero trying to protect both his family and his community.
Julie Benz brought emotional depth to Stephanie Powell, balancing scientific curiosity with the responsibilities of motherhood.
The younger cast members also received praise for portraying teenagers suddenly forced to navigate extraordinary powers alongside ordinary school life.
One reason many fans remain disappointed is that the first season ended with several unanswered questions.
Major storylines involving the mysterious origins of the Powell family’s powers were only beginning to unfold.
Viewers were left wondering:
- How powerful could the family eventually become?
- What was the true purpose behind the mysterious experiments?
- Would new superpowered individuals appear?
- Could the Powells continue hiding their abilities?
Because the show ended abruptly, these questions were never answered on screen.
Did No Ordinary Family Influence Later Superhero Shows?
Although often overlooked today, No Ordinary Family arrived before the explosion of superhero television.
In later years, audiences embraced series such as:
- Arrow
- The Flash
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- Supergirl
- The Boys
Many television commentators believe No Ordinary Family arrived slightly ahead of the superhero boom that transformed television throughout the 2010s.
Had it premiered just a few years later, some fans argue it may have enjoyed greater success.
Fan Reactions After the Cancellation
Following ABC’s announcement, disappointed viewers launched online campaigns encouraging the network to reconsider.
Social media was still developing as a platform for fan movements, but many supporters expressed frustration that the series ended before reaching its full potential.
Even today, discussions about the show regularly appear in television forums, with many viewers describing it as an underrated superhero series.
While it lasted only one season, No Ordinary Family occupies a unique place in television history.
It attempted to humanize superheroes by focusing less on saving the world and more on saving a family. Its blend of action, humor, and heartfelt storytelling helped it develop a dedicated following that still remembers the series fondly years after its cancellation.
For many viewers, No Ordinary Family was simply canceled too soon.
